Discipline: Science
Mitigation of Biogenic Souring of Fluids and Bio corrosion of Steel by Sulphate Reducing Bacteria using Mushroom and Plant Extracts
Contribution to knowledge:
This work demonstrated the presence of compounds in the essential oil of the aromatic plant O. gratissimum, fruiting body of the wild mushroom Ganoderma tropicum and fruits of Gmelina arborea that showed activities against SRB isolated from the Bonga oilfield. The extracts have antimicrobial and anticorrosion properties. It is note worthy that these extracts can be potentiated using an equally green chemical in the form of the amino acid D-tyrosine. The results of this study give hope of finding suitable green chemicals from plants and mushrooms for oilfield operations to prevent souring and corrosion.
Supervisors:
Dr. Immanuel, Omega Math ew, was jointly supervised by Prof. Gideon O. Abu & Dr. Herbert O. Stanley both of the Department of Microbiology, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
