PROFESSOR MICHAEL N. OTI

Professor Michael N. Oti was educated at the Univesity of Heildelberge, Germany (1971-1979) where he received the Vordiplom (BSc) in Geology (1975) from Institute of Geology; the Diplom (MSc) in Sedimentary Petrology/Sedimentology (1977); and Dr.rer.nat. (PhD, 1980) in Sedimentology and Reservoir Geology, earning the graduate degree from Heildelberge University’s renowned Institute of Sedimentary Research, where he was also post-doctoral fellow and Assistant Professor until 1981. Professor Oti, a petroleum geologist of international repute, has taught and conducted research at the University of Heidelberg (Germany), University of Connecticut, Storrs., USA (as visiting professor) and occupies a Professorial Chair in Geology at the University of Port Harcourt (Nigeria). He has authored or co-authored several publications in sedimentology & reservoir geology, basin analysis, as well as other aspects of petroleum geology, including a book titled Geology of Deltas published in 1995 by A. A. Balkema Publishers of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Apart from over 70 journal and book publications, he has written much propriety material (over 100 industry technical reports and monographs). His current research interest focus on diageneric & lithofacies controls on reservoir quality: characterisation of micro-architectural petrographic parameters that impact porosity and permeability; enhanced oil recovery (EOR) issues; as well as the causes of short-and long-range compartmentalisation in hydrocarbon reservoirs. He is an active member of many professional societies which include: the American Association Petroleum Geologists; the Geologische Vereinigung of Germany; Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society; Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists, among others; and since 1987 became a distinguished Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany.
